What Candidates Are Prioritizing in 2026

Top talent is in demand, and competition for great people is fierce. We surveyed more than one thousand professionals to understand what factors are dictating candidate decisions this year. The patterns are clear. Candidates want transparency around compensation, confidence in long‑term stability and growth, flexibility that signals trust, and a hiring process that feels genuine and, above all, human.

Transparent Compensation Is the Baseline. Here’s What Comes Next.

Candidates want real clarity on pay. In our survey, 83% rated salary as very or extremely important and 43% considered benefits as extremely important. Together, these numbers show that pay clarity and total compensation package are baseline expectation for serious consideration. Right next to compensation, candidates are also weighing company stability, team culture, flexibility, and a clear growth path when deciding where to engage.

Long‑Term Stability and Growth

Stability now ranks at the top of the decision set. In a constantly shifting market, many candidates are prioritizing roles that feel dependable and future-focused. 83% of respondents rated company stability as very or extremely important. Many professionals are choosing to stay put, as overall turnover recently fell to a nine-year low of 5.8% according to ADP research. Today’s candidates are aware of the competitive talent market and are weighing moves more carefully. And it’s no surprise why, considering 31% experienced a layoff in the last 12 months, and 45% are thinking of taking on a second income stream. Many professionals in industries investing in rapid AI adoption are feeling this most, further reinforcing a rise in job‑hugging.

Candidates are looking for a role where they can grow, contribute, and stay, and they want reassurance that the role has long‑term potential. For hiring managers, ground your conversations in the role’s purpose and how it advances the team’s near‑term roadmap, then show where strong performance can lead.

Flexibility Still In High Demand

Candidates understand that in-office expectations have returned in many sectors in 2026, yet they still value options that help them do their best work. 81% prefer a hybrid schedule, and 62% would accept lower pay to keep flexible or remote options. Flexibility communicates trust and acknowledges that people have lives outside of work. Even for teams that operate fully in-office, hiring managers can set expectations that are in line with the market today and offer earned flexibility over time as trust is built. Set clear expectations around in‑office days, collaboration, and situations when remote work is permissible. When flexibility is defined and well communicated, it strengthens your employer brand and makes close calls go your way.

A Clear, Human Hiring Process Wins Candidates

After pay, stability, and flexibility, the interview process itself can tip the decision. Many candidates report discouraging experiences in the market and want to be treated like people, not just bullets on a resume. Clear communication and transparency at each step go a long way. Share the timeline upfront. Explain who candidates will meet and why. Offer concise feedback when you can. Paint an honest picture of the day-to-day so job seekers can make an informed choice. A thoughtful process builds trust and strengthens your employer brand with both active and passive candidates.
