Furniture Designer

We’re partnering with a leading home furnishings and lifestyle retailer seeking an experienced Furniture Designer to develop original collections from initial concept through production. This is a hands-on design opportunity for someone with a strong point of view, elevated taste level, and deep technical knowledge of furniture construction, materials, and manufacturing.



Candidates may be considered at the Senior Designer, Manager, or Director level based on experience.



Key Highlights

Pay: $50-70/hr - commensurate with candidate experience & level
Location: Downtown San Francisco
Schedule: Hybrid - In Office 4-5 days/week
Type: Contract - potential to extend or convert to full time


What You’ll Do

  • Conceptualize and develop original furniture collections that align with the brand’s aesthetic, customer, and business goals
  • Establish a clear design point of view and introduce fresh aesthetics, functionality, and innovation each season
  • Research furniture, interiors, lifestyle, and market trends to identify new product opportunities
  • Translate ideas into mood boards, sketches, CAD drawings, 3D models, renderings, and complete product specifications
  • Lead designs from initial ideation through sample development, revisions, approval, and production
  • Apply knowledge of furniture engineering, construction, materials, finishes, pricing, and manufacturing throughout the design process
  • Evaluate designs for feasibility, durability, safety, cost efficiency, and market viability
  • Review technical drawings and product samples with close attention to construction and design details
  • Partner with Product Development, Merchandising, Sourcing, Engineering, and vendor teams to execute the design vision
  • Develop and present seasonal concepts, design direction, and product samples to senior leadership
  • Manage multiple projects against the product development calendar, ensuring deadlines and key milestones are met

Qualifications

  • Minimum of 5 years of professional furniture design experience
  • Degree in Furniture Design, Industrial Design, Product Design, or equivalent professional experience
  • Strong portfolio demonstrating original furniture concepts and products brought through development
  • Aspirational taste level with a sophisticated eye for interiors, proportion, materials, and finish
  • Technical expertise in bedroom furniture, upholstery construction, and wood finishes
  • Experience designing with construction, manufacturing, and target pricing in mind
  • Strong understanding of furniture engineering, materials, and production methods
  • Ability to review and provide detailed feedback on technical drawings and samples
  • Proficiency in Illustrator, Photoshop, CAD, and 3D rendering tools such as Rhino, SolidWorks, KeyShot, or AutoCAD
  • Strong presentation, communication, and cross-functional collaboration skills
