What to Wear to a Professional Job Interview

Making a strong first impression is imperative for any job interview. While different workplaces may have different standards of dress, knowing how to put your best foot forward and showcase your skills and abilities in the most polished way possible will help you land the job. Below are some essential tips for what to wear to a job interview to stand out and land your next great opportunity.

Do Your Research

Every company is different. Prior to the interview, do preliminary research to get a better understanding of the workplace that you will be visiting. More creative environments may have a somewhat relaxed dress code compared to more corporate environments.

One way to decipher what will be appropriate to wear to the interview is through the published content of the brand. Look on social media and the company’s website to see if you can gain a better picture of what is worn in the office. The ultimate goal is to fit in with the office – you should look like you already work there!

When in Doubt: Opt Professional

No matter where the job interview is, when in doubt opt for a more professional look. It’s always better to air on the more conservative or conventional side of things when it comes to what to wear to a job interview. Use your intuition and choose pieces that you feel comfortable in, but reflect your most polished and professional self. Even if the company hosts a casual workspace, you are still going to a business meeting. Remember that less is more – opt for neutral colors, classic pieces, and less makeup or a clean shave to achieve a polished look.

The Basics
  • For men, bring a jacket to keep an elevated look. Slacks (or jeans depending on the company) and an ironed dress shirt are always a safe bet.
  • For women, a blouse and jacket are a great place to start. Slacks or an appropriate length skirt are always safe bottoms.
Why in Doubt: Opt Professional outfit examples for women and men. Navy, grey, or black suit bottoms and colloared shirts or blouses are good options.

Ultimately, the research you have done on the company will help you decide what is what isn’t appropriate to wear. It may be okay to wear a trendier outfit to a fashion or creative brand, but that may not be the case for a more corporate or business professional environment.

Stand Out for the Right Reasons

What you wear can help show that you are a fit for the environment, but how do you allow your personality to stand out? Being polished and put together can help make a memorable impression and differentiate you from other candidates. While it’s different for everyone, bringing confidence and poise to your interview will speak volumes.

Be personable, smile, show confidence (but not arrogance), listen to what the questions are and stick to the topic. Be present. Highlight the research you have done on the company, and show that you are engaged in the conversation and excited about the opportunity.

Stand Out for the Right Reasons. Ligher or neutral suit pieces with subtle visual interest are great for both women and men when interviewing.

Be Polished Whether In Person or Virtual

Whether in person or virtual, you can ace your next interview by showcasing your strengths during the conversation and knowing what to wear to a job interview. By finding what makes you feel confident and how you can be as polished as possible, you will not only show that you belong in the workplace, but also stand out as the best fit for the job.

Be polished whether In person for virtual. Visual examples of patterned jackets or blouses with flair. Bonus points for comfortable slacks.
