How to Be Your Recruiter’s Favorite Candidate

If you’ve never worked with a recruiter before, it’s normal to have questions about how the process works. Even if you have worked with one in the past, every recruiter and agency operates differently. One of the most common misunderstandings I come across is the expectation that we’re actively searching for roles on behalf of each individual candidate we meet. In reality, it works the other way around: our clients come to us with open roles, and we search our candidate network for the right match.
It’s important to understand that no recruiter is going to be able to place every candidate they meet, even if we wish we could. That said, recruiters are a valuable part of your job search team. We’re here to be your extra set of eyes — someone who’s in your corner, who can open doors you may not have access to on your own, and who can help you tell your story in the strongest possible light. And when the timing, skill set, and opportunity all line up? That’s when the magic happens and a placement is made.
Here’s how to be the kind of candidate recruiters love working with — and how to build a strong relationship that can benefit you throughout your career.
Be Polite and Professional
This one might seem basic, but it’s incredibly important. Whether you’re emailing, on the phone, texting, or meeting in person, treating your recruiter with professionalism and kindness makes a lasting impression. Remember, we’re not just here to fill roles, we’re here to advocate for you. When we see that you’re respectful, collaborative, and thoughtful, it gives us confidence that you’ll represent yourself well to our clients, too.
Communicate Clearly and Honestly
Responsiveness is key. Let us know how you prefer to be contacted — text, email, or phone — and be open with us throughout the process. Transparency helps us do our job better. If you’ve been laid off, if you left a job earlier than expected, or if a previous environment just wasn’t the right fit, sharing that context allows us to tell your story professionally and accurately.
It’s also important to keep us informed about your job search. If you’re in interview rounds with other agencies, or have competing offers, let us know. That way, we can manage expectations and timelines with our clients appropriately. And if you’re in an interview process through us and find you’re not loving the role — we want to hear that too.
Keep Your Materials in Sync
Make sure your resume and LinkedIn are aligned: job titles, dates, order of roles, all of it. When there are discrepancies, it can cause unnecessary confusion. A clean, accurate LinkedIn profile with a professional headshot also makes a big difference. And while you're at it, take a moment to review your social media presence overall. Employers will often Google candidates before interviews, and anything we can find, they can too. It’s smart to be intentional of how you’re presenting yourself online. If you don’t want employers to see your content, just set your social media profiles to private.
Trust the Process
We love to hear from our candidates, but checking in every day, or even every few days, can quickly become overwhelming. Recruiters may be working with hundreds of candidates, and if they all were to reach out every few days, it would be impossible to reply to everyone. Unless we’re already in frequent communication about an active role, reaching out to check in with your recruiter every two weeks is a great rhythm. It shows you’re engaged and excited about opportunities without overwhelming the process. Trust that if something opens that’s a match for your background, we’ll be in touch.
If you’re already in an interview process through us, keep us in the loop on how you’re feeling at each stage. If it’s not clicking, tell us. Our goal isn’t just to get you a job. It’s to get you the right job. I’d rather pull you out of a process than have you accept an offer you’re unsure about and leave a few months later.
Stay in Touch and Refer Your Peers
Our relationship doesn’t end when you get the job. I love hearing from candidates even months and years after they’ve been placed. Whether you’re settling in smoothly or running into challenges, we’re still here for you. If the role isn’t what you hoped for after giving it a fair shot, we want to talk through that too.
Referrals are another way to build a lasting relationship with your recruiter. If you had a great experience, consider introducing us to a friend, a former colleague, or even your current hiring manager. I’ve had candidates refer their siblings, past bosses, and entire teams — and it’s always meaningful. The more people we’re able to connect with, the stronger our network becomes, and that benefits everyone.
Final Thoughts
At the end of the day, we’re here to help. We may not always have the perfect role ready the moment you reach out, but our goal is to support you, advocate for you, and help you navigate the process with confidence. Your job search is still your own, but working with a recruiter is one extra tool to have in your toolbelt. The more we understand your background, your goals, and your preferences, the better we can represent you.
When you’re honest, polite, communicative, and prepared, it doesn’t just make our jobs easier, it makes it that much more rewarding to champion your success. And that’s what this is all about: helping you find a role you’re excited to step into, and one where you can truly thrive.
