Senior or General Counsel

Leading, high-growth kratom supplement company is seeking a Senior or General Counsel (title DOE) to lead and execute on all legal functions, including litigation and transactional matters. The General Counsel plays a pivotal role in ensuring legal tasks are handled with precision, professionalism and must have the proven ability to execute at the highest level. The General Counsel takes the lead in creating and overseeing legal strategy and working side-by-side with the Operations, Marketing, Sales, Finance and Human Resources Teams to ensure successful execution of the company’s projects and initiatives. The General Counsel provides leadership in addressing legal and business issues related to organizational structure, mergers and acquisitions, real estate, operations, finance, strategic partnerships, governmental relations, risk management, human resources, corporate governance, and other legal matters facing the company.

Compensation: $250-350K base plus discretionary bonus and competitive benefits package

Location: Candidate can be based in one of the corporate locations (Salt Lake City, UT / Columbus, OH / Dallas, TX) or Fully Remote

Supervisory Responsibilities:

  • Oversee Paralegal or Legal Assistant staff member(s).
  • Oversee all regulatory matters and their application to various departments within the company.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Offer recommendations and negotiate terms to protect the organization's interests and ensure alignment with our organizational vision, goals, and priorities.
  • Advise on company legal issues, including in the areas of contracts, regulatory compliance, data privacy, intellectual property, product safety and other areas as assigned.
  • Manage oversight of all company litigation matters, coordinating closely with and retaining specialized outside counsel.
  • Provide day-to-day legal counseling advice to company executives, board, and other stakeholders.
  • Supervise and oversee work completed by a paralegal.
  • Responsible for drafting, negotiating, reviewing, and summarizing a wide variety of contracts.
  • Draft documents, corporate policies, resolutions, and other legal or related documents.
  • Provide support on intellectual property matters, product safety issues, including response to consumer incident reports, product liability litigation and product recall.
  • Provide support on business transactions (i.e., mergers/acquisitions), including non-disclosure agreements, due diligence and coordinating with outside counsel.

Education and Experience:

  • Minimum ten (10) years of experience practicing law in a general counsel role with exposure to all areas of law including litigation, contracts and negotiations,
  • intellectual property, employment, and governance.
  • Minimum five years (5) of experience at a law firm, preferably in litigation.
  • Juris Doctorate/Law Degree from an accredited law school with successful passing of the Bar in at least one jurisdiction. Admission into the Utah or Ohio State Bar Associations is preferred.


Required Skills/Abilities:

  • Understanding of supply chain and manufacturing operations; and extensive experience in corporate law, contracts, employment law, and regulatory compliance.
  • Excellent organizational, analytical, and communication skills to express complex legal matters in clear, concise, business-friendly language with a strong record of effective cross-group collaboration, as well as the ability to manage multiple large-scale projects simultaneously.
  • Ability to recognize and weigh business and legal risks, think strategically and advance creative, legally sound practical solutions in the context of business goals.
  • Preferred experience with document management system and legal knowledge database.
  • Excellent drafting and negotiation skills, with acute attention to detail.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively, with a high level of integrity and professionalism.
